Kin & Fate - What's in the Name
At the heart of every story I’ve had the honour to document, two forces are always at play: connection and chance. That’s what Kin & Fate means to me.
Kin is about the closeness we choose.
It’s the family we’re born into — and the one we build. It’s the people who really see us, who show up, who love us through our awkward phases and quiet victories. Kin is intimacy. Loyalty. That unspoken thread that ties you to your person, your people, your place.
Fate is the spark.
It’s the late-night coincidence that changed everything. The timing neither of you expected. The paths that somehow crossed, even when it didn’t make sense. Fate is wonder. Serendipity. The idea that maybe, just maybe, some stories are meant to unfold.
Together, Kin & Fate speaks to the kind of love I’m drawn to — rooted and real, yet full of mystery. It’s the soft, cinematic beauty found in the way people belong to each other.
And that’s exactly what I aim to capture:
Not just what it looked like, but what it feels like to love and be loved — to find each other in this big, unpredictable world.
Why the Change
For a long time, this business wore my name — Joshua Ryan Photography — because, truthfully, I didn’t put much thought into it when I started. I was just trying to do good work, one shoot at a time.
But over time, that changed. I changed.
This year, I made the decision to leave my day job and step fully into self-employment. That leap gave me space. Space to reflect, invest more deeply in this work, and reimagine what it could be.
I didn’t just want a logo update. I wanted a name that better reflected the people I work with and the stories I’m drawn to. One that felt less like it pointed at me and more like it belonged to the moments we make together.
Kin & Fate gives me room to grow — not just as a photographer, but as a filmmaker too. It’s a name that opens the door to more emotion, more movement, more meaning. And that’s the kind of work I want to chase.
What's changing, and what's not?
This rebrand is a fresh chapter, but it’s not a total rewrite.
What’s changing:
+ A new name: Kin & Fate PhotoFilm
+ Visual identity — darker tones, cinematic typography, a little more mood
+ A renewed focus on intentional storytelling
+ Expansion into video and motion work
What’s not:
| It’s still me — same person behind the lens
| My style is still emotional, honest, and rooted in connection
| The experience you’ve come to expect (if you’ve worked with me before)
| My belief that photography should feel, not just look, beautiful
At the end of the day, this is the same business with the same soul, just with a new frame around it.
